Still, if you’re uncomfortable, sex is sure to be, too. So how do you overcome your insecurity? Think about what you love about your body—the way it feels, moves, or your favorite body part. If you’re truly out of shape, commit to a workout program, which will improve your health and energy level. You're in the mood and your partner is ready, so you make a beeline to the bed with plans to rock the sheets. But then you feel it—a dull ache, an itchy rash, or a searing out-of-no where jab. When you've always enjoyed sex and suddenly it hurts, it can be confusing and worrisome. "Pain during sex is one of the most common things patients ask about, but most of the time, it's caused by something temporary that can be treated," says Alyssa Dweck, MD, an OB/GYN in Westchester, New York and coauthor of V Is for Vagina ($12; amazon.com). In fact, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that 75% of women experience painful sex at some point in their lives. Get a handle on what's keeping you sidelined from the sack by reading this checklist of symptoms, then the solution that will get you back in the saddle again.

                                       

The outside of your vagina is crazy-irritated

Possible cause: Personal care products. This isn't the kind of burning love anyone hopes to experience. But if irritation and redness on your outer labia or vulva are keeping you from enjoying the action, blame a bad reaction on a personal care product that made contact with the area—such as soap, body wash, massage oil, or even your toilet paper. "Dyes, perfumes, and other additives in these products can trigger vaginitis, or inflammation of the skin around the vagina," says Dr. Dweck.

Get back in the sack: Speed healing by leaving the area alone for a day or two until the irritation subsides. (Dabbing on a lotion or cream can just make the inflammation worse.) Then, take inventory of the products you use below the belt and swap out items with chemical additives for all-natural ones, Dr. Dweck says.

Congratulations: You’ve got the flu! That might sound like a minor inconvenience, but influenza is no joke. Despite the medical community’s best preventive efforts (including the flu vaccine, which most of us should be getting annually), millions of Americans are sickened, hundreds of thousands of us are hospitalized, and tens of thousands of us die from flu every year. Unfortunately, since influenza is a virus, there’s no cure for it; antibiotics are useless against it and for the most part, you just need to wait it out. But there is a way to soften the blow. “Flu is one of the few viral respiratory illnesses that we can actually treat specifically,” says Susan J. Rehm, MD, vice chair of the department of infectious disease and executive director of physician health at Cleveland Clinic.

“Antiviral medications are specific to the influenza virus and they actually inhibit the virus from reproducing, and in that way can help people have a milder case of flu and get better faster,” says Dr. Rehm. “They are the only things that are proven to make a difference in terms of the severity or duration of illness.” Oseltamivir, a generic form of the oral antiviral drug Tamiflu, received FDA approval at the end of last summer, and both it and an inhaled antiviral, zanamivir (aka Relenza) are available by prescription this season.

Act quickly 

The key to antiviral prescription meds’ effectiveness is the rapidity with which they’re administered; they work best when they’re administered within the first 48 hours of illness. “What it will probably do is shave off at least a day from the illness,” Dr. Rehm says. “That illness that might normally last five to seven days hopefully would last a day or two less.”

Who should get it

 Anti-viral treatment can literally be a lifesaver for folks at higher risk of complications from the flu, including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with underlying medical issues (such as diabetes, cancer, or heart or lung disease). For those at lower risk, it may not be necessary. “Most healthy people who develop influenza infection do just fine by getting plenty of fluids and rest and do not need an antiviral medication unless they have severe infection,” says Pritish Tosh, MD, an infectious diseases physician and researcher at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

That said, antivirals may still be helpful. “I have no reservations about prescribing it to low risk patients,” says Scott Bernstein, MD, an internal medicine physician at Bon Secours Medical Group in Rockland County, New York. “There is a rapid flu test that gives the results in 10 minutes, so a physician can easily wait for the test to return before prescribing the drug,”

Know the signs

 In order to make sure you get treated in time, it pays to familiarize yourself with flu’s specific symptoms so that you know when it’s time to contact your doctor. For that, Dr. Rehm offers a mnemonic: FACTS (Fever, Aches, Chills, Tiredness, and Sudden onset). “The typical flu in most patients causes fever and achiness for two to four days, but they are often left with a dry cough and tiredness that can last awhile,” says Dr. Bernstein, who recommends drinking plenty of fluids and taking fever-reducing medication.

Dr. Rehm emphasizes that getting help is easier than ever: “There are so many ways to access care these days, whether it’s a phone call to the doctor’s office, a virtual physician visit or virtual health care provider visit, or a trip to urgent care.” She notes that it’s also important to stay home from work or school and generally avoid going out in public while you recover. “That’s both for yourself and the other people around you. The reality is that you really do need to stop and allow yourself to get better, because if you keep going with the flu, that probably increases your risk for complications, as well as exposes everybody around you to the virus.” Long story short: Reach out for treatment as quickly as you can, then be prepared to stay put until you’ve recovered.

 Anyone who hasn't had a flu shot this season should make a point to get vaccinated now, U.S. health officials advise. Flu activity usually peaks in January or February, and flu can strike as late as May, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. As long as the virus is circulating, it's not too late to receive a flu shot and protect yourself and others against this seasonal misery. So far, the flu season has been mild, but U.S. health officials expect activity to pick up in the next few weeks.

 "Influenza seasons and severity are often unpredictable. Annual influenza vaccination is the best way to prevent influenza among people 6 months of age and older," Marion Gruber, director of FDA's Office of Vaccine Research and Review, said in an agency news release. "However, taking such practical measures as washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick can also help to decrease the spread and minimize the effects of flu," Gruber said. Even healthy adults should be vaccinated every year, the agency said. healthgreb.

Children and older people are typically at greatest risk for the flu and related complications, but flu viruses occasionally hit young and middle-aged adults hardest. Last year, older Americans were hit particularly hard. Record numbers of seniors were hospitalized due to the flu, and by early March this age group accounted for the majority of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza, researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. Antiviral drugs—such as Tamiflu (oseltamivir phosphate), Relenza (zanamivir) and Rapivab (peramivir)—may help ease flu symptoms, but they are not a substitute for the seasonal flu vaccine, the agency said.

 Virtually everyone older than 6 months of age is advised to get a flu shot. The exceptions are people with life-threatening allergies to flu vaccine or any ingredient in the vaccine. This might include gelatin, antibiotics, or other ingredients, according to the CDC. And last year's flu shot won't help you now, experts cautioned. "Influenza viruses can change from year to year, due to different subtypes and strains that circulate each year," said Gruber. That's why each year scientists produce a new flu vaccine that they predict will most closely match the viruses in circulation. Meanwhile, any protection provided by the previous year's vaccine wanes over time.

 Developing an effective vaccine is a year-round effort. Each February global public health experts collect and analyze data from around the world to identify the flu viruses likely to cause the most illnesses the following flu season. Based on this analysis and the recommendations of an FDA advisory committee, scientists select the virus strains for inclusion in the seasonal flu vaccines used in the United States. "The closer the match between the circulating strains causing disease and the virus strains in the vaccine, the better the protection against influenza," Gruber said.

The agency continuously monitors the safety of vaccines even after they are approved for use. This includes yearly surveillance for Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological condition associated with the 1976 flu vaccine. In a typical season, flu complications—including pneumonia—send more than 200,000 Americans to the hospital. Death rates linked to flu vary annually, but have gone as high as 49,000 deaths in a year, the CDC says.

Garlic 

Load up on members of the allium family, like garlic, onions, shallots, and chives. “Garlic has been shown to reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms by increasing the activity of natural killer cells,” says D’Adamo. Similarly, he says, onions have properties that increase white blood cell counts, essential in fighting off pathogens. D’Adamo’s favorite way to eat them? As a sauté with mushrooms. You’ll get a double bang for your flu-fighting buck.

Kiwi

 Vitamin C has a reputation as a flu-fighting nutrient for a reason: There’s some research to indicate that the vitamin can shorten the duration of cold systems and help prevent illness in people who exercise, D’Adamo points out. So often we reach for orange juice to shore up immunity. Instead, reach for the actual fruit, advises Charlotte Hammond, integrative registered dietitian of Eating with Ease. One cup of orange sections contains 160% of your daily need for vitamin C; a cup of grapefruit offers 120%. However, a cup of kiwi blows citrus out of the water, with 273% of your daily value of C.

Pumpkin

Seeds While it’s important to maximize your body’s zinc levels throughout the year, you should top them off when you want to ward off a little something coming on. “Zinc is essential when you need to kick an invader out,” says Hammond. Pumpkin seeds are one of the best vegetarian sources of the mineral; sunflower seeds or sunflower seed butter are other good options–and some of Hammond’s favorites, she says. Sunflower seeds are also an excellent source of vitamin E, another nutrient that supports immunity.
